Committee 2005 Annual Report
By Gabriel Christian
The
Emergency Committee had a productive year and sensitized the Cadet Corp to
Disaster Preparedness. More active participation by members, and a
proactive posture, is desired.
January
2005: The DAAS
Emergency Committee donated $1,500.00 US worth of stretchers, collapsible
rescue spades, medical kits and two Swiss Army Stretchers to the Dominica Cadet
Corp. The funds were donated by the Law Firm of Gabriel J. Christian
& Associates, LLC in response to the Portsmouth Earthquake of 2004. At that
time the Dominica Cadet Corp members in Portsmouth responded promptly to render
assistance. The hand-over was executed during the period of Cadet Week.
At that time. Committee Chair Gabriel J. Christian was commissioned a Captain
in the Dominica Cadet Corps.
July-August
2005: The
Dominica cadet Corps held Camp Sequi at Castle Bruce High School. The focus of
the camp, under the direction of Adjutant to the Corps, Lt. Dorsen Robin was
Disaster Preparedness Management. DAAS President Clayton Shillingford was
invited to address the gathering during the closing ceremonies. DAAS members
Lynton Scotland and Dr. Thomson Fontaine also met with the Cadet attendees and
inspected their quarters. The first dozen Carib Cadets were graduated in
Disaster Preparedness Management; a historical first.
The
Way Forward:
The
committee is key, as Dominica is prone to disasters. I will attempt to
secure the active collaboration of Cecil Shillingford. Please append his data
to our site:
Mr. Cecil
Shillingford
National Disaster Coordinator

Bayfront,
Roseau,
Commonwealth of Dominica

Fax: (767) 448-2883

Regular liaison with
Shillingford would do well for the committee. I will endeavor to recruit more
volunteers, to include physicians and others. Marvlyn Birmingham is a
good candidate, considering her position as PMH Administrator. Dr. Pascal will
also be copied on this.
I propose
that someone with more time and a background in ham radio operations take over
as Chair, as I will not be able to meaningfully continue in my current role. I
simply do not have the time. I will stay on until a replacement is found.
Best
regards,
Gabriel J.
