Annual Report (2000-2002)
Introduction
This report covers the period from the inception of DAAS in November, 2000 to the financial year ending December 31st, 2002. Health assistance has always been at the forefront of DAAS activities.
Accomplishments:
- Working closely with the Rosie Douglas Foundation (RDF) and several Dominica Associations and individuals around the world, DAAS undertook this informal role of coordinating supplies to the Princess Margaret Hospital.
- This led to the building of an affiliate Guest Site, Friends of PMH, a local NGO organized for soliciting assistance to the PMH.
- From then on DAAS undertook the formal coordination and documentation of shipping of medical supplies and equipment and has continued without ceasing.
Evaluation of Accomplishments:
The coordinative work of DAAS, in retrospect, can best be evaluated by the facility with which supplies are solicited successfully and delivered at minimum cost. Our success lies in the following winning procedure:
- Making contact with prospective donors by mail, land or electronic, with an appeal letter and a prepared list of supply needs
- Set up shipping arrangements with favourable agents and obtain duty concessions from the government of Dominica.
- And, finally, ensuring donations are received and delivered safely and donors thanked.
Goals for the future:
Presently, health assistance to Dominica is coordinated by the DAAS Health Assistance Sub-committee which is committed to:
- Continue liaising with other organisations, Dominica associations and individuals outside the Academy to facilitate procedures and policies as regards requirements at home, and
- Facilitate the shipment of equipment and supplies through government contact.
There is no doubt that DAAS will continue to be a vital cog in the worldwide wheel of assistance to PMH and the Dominica Health Services.
