Mesyé Kwik! Kwak!
tells the story of Dominica, an island rich in culture and with a history that encompasses various forms of the country's transformation from colonialism to independence. African slaves, brought to the island to work on the British plantations, carried with them their various myths, beliefs, languages and art forms and these have passed down through the generations. Today they are still an integral part of this country's heritage. The characters in Mesyé Kwik! Kwak! are used to portray some of these and other aspects of village and Dominican life which still have their bearing from years past. Most of the stories are set in the west coast village of St. Joseph where Giftus grew up as a child. The young boys in "The Stone" and in "The Pilgrim" introduce us to Dominicans belief in evil spirits, the lougarou and la diabless, and the power of religion. "Grandpa Was in America" shows us Dominica's fixation to the American way of life and in "A Father's Hope" we see the widening gap between generations in the country-and there's more.

THE ISLAND MAN SINGS HIS SONG

(U.S.A. 2001) Click on book cover to order.
The Island Man Sings His Song
is a collection of poetry that deals with various aspects of everyday Dominican life: politics, culture, nature, religion, and romance. A bit nostalgic in nature, too, some of the poems talk of a Dominica that was and seeks to find which way the island is heading. As one reviewer puts it: 'It brought back fun memories of listening and sharing stories, and riddles under clear moonlight skies. The Island Man Sings His Song is as real as I remember. For those who forgot or did not have the unique opportunity to experience life in Dominica, The Island Man Sings His Song takes you there.'
